Late in 2022 SLS NSW introduced a Mental Health and Wellbeing Champion Program. Two of our club members Melanie Brock and Nicola Hartley volunteered to do the training course and became mental health ambassadors for Warriewoood. Nicola and Mel plan to roll out a series of events at Warriewood with the following aims:

  • Raise your awareness of your own (and others’) mental health
  • Motivate you to proactively look after your mental health & wellbeing
  • Feel confident to reach out for support if you need/want to
  • Contribute to SLS NSW being a safe and healthy environment

We will kick off with a blokes night run by Dominic Lynch and Mark Williams on 12th Dec @ 7.00pm.

In December 2022, Warriewood SLSC club member, Dominic Lynch was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer. As an active patrol member and lifelong non-smoker this came as a huge blow to both he and his family. Dominic believes that the support of the Club and the broader community has been critical for his ability to maintain a positive mindset throughout this adversity.

Dominic wants to share his story and will be joined by Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience and fellow club member, Professor Mark Williams who will explain how our brain works and why a positive approach to adverse situations can alter the process and the outcome. This will be an open discussion on the importance of staying positive and having good relationships with loved ones and the wider community.

This conversation is for men only and will also cover the importance of pre-emptive health check-ups and that it is no measure of weakness to expose your vulnerabilities.
