June Margaret Mackay

(28/6/1932 to 26/12/2021)

It is with great sadness that we advise the passing of a Warriewood SLSC Life Member, June Mackay.

June Margaret Brandon was born in Glasgow, Scotland on the 28/6/1932. She enjoyed a happy childhood with her sister Dorothy going to Willowbank Infant’s School then onto Woodside Secondary College. She was a bright girl and received academic awards in each of her Senior School years.

At the age of 13 she met Jack Mackay in the school choir. When Jack aged 17 left for Sydney in 1949 she gave him a kiss the first time Jack realised his affection for June was reciprocated.

June came to Australia in 1956 with Jack’s mother Ethel Dreda Mackay. The family has always joked what followed was actually an “arranged marriage”. Incredibly Jack and June were engaged 2 weeks later and married in 1957. They were married for 64 years.

June had 3 children Alison, Gillian and Rob. Gillian had 3 daughters Rachael, Sarah and Hannah and Rob 2 children Jessica and Lincoln.

June was very active in the community including Warriewood SLSC, a Long Reef Radio Room Officer, Secretary of the Local Liberal Party, Justice of the Peace, Member of the Eastern Star (for 50 years), Treasurer of the Ladies Auxiliary, Girl Guide Leader, Treasurer of the Knitter’s Guild and Secretary of the Girl Guides Ski Lodge. She also worked 1 day a week for 15 years at the Spastic Centre.

June was the first female to be awarded Life Membership of Warriewood SLSC in 2004.

June was loved by all who knew her. She was kind, fun, compassionate and tolerant. She knew the true essence of empathy and would regularly go out of her way to help someone in need. She was an amazing mother, fabulous cook, meticulous home-keeper and perhaps greatest of all the most incredible, loving and supportive wife to her Jack.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Jock and the Mackay family.

June Mackay’s Funeral will be on at 10am on Tuesday the 4th of January at the Narrabeen Baptist Church, 13 Grenfell Ave, North Narrabeen 2101.
