The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge to provide an advanced first aid response, including management of the incident and other first aiders until the arrival of medical or other assistance.

Upon successful completion of this course participants will receive the nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the following unit of competency:

  • HLTAID006 Provide advanced first aid

Course Content

  • The principles of advanced first aid
  • Relevant health and safety guidelines
  • Basic life support and CPR, including safe manual handling skills
  • Basic anatomy and physiology
  • Assessment of casualties and development of management plan
  • Basic triage for multiple casualties
  • First aid procedures for a range of scenarios, including the following:
    • allergic reaction and anaphylaxis
    • wounds and bleeding
    • burns, including thermal, chemical, friction and electrical
    • cardiac conditions, including chest pain
    • choking and airway obstruction
    • diabetes
    • drowning
    • emergency childbirth
    • envenomation
    • hypothermia, hyperthermia, dehydration and heat stroke
    • eye and ear injuries
    • head, neck and spinal injuries
    • needle stick injuries
    • poisoning and toxic substances
    • respiratory distress, including asthma
    • seizures, including epilepsy
    • shock
    • skin injuries
    • sprains, strains, dislocations and fractures
    • stroke
    • substance misuse, including common drugs and alcohol, including illicit drugs


  • Participants must be a minimum of 15 years of age on the date of final assessment.
  • Participants must hold the following unit of competency:
  • HLTAID003 Provide First Aid or equivalent
